I looked up and saw Jackie coming from the room. I asked her what happened, and she told me that she had said the Lord's prayer with the lady.
This morning, we had a patient that had previously been "non-verbal", a stroke patient with other medical issues, who suddenly started screaming inconsolably. I tried to go in and just gently stroke her face and hair, spoke to her in a soothing voice, and was able to calm her down for a short period of time. Sometime later, she started screaming, "Lord, please forgive me for my sins," over and over. Knowing that the plan was for her to go to hospice, we talked about consulting a chaplain to come, but before we could put the consult in the computer, the patient became instantly quiet again. I looked up and saw Jackie coming from the room. I asked her what happened, and she told me that she had said the Lord's prayer with the lady. This soothed the patient, and she was able to rest the remainder of the day. What an amazing display of compassion and of the BayCare value: Dignity.
