When it came time to make important decisions regarding how to proceed, including our decision to take him off of life support, Jordan was extraordinarily delicate relaying information and answering questions.
My son G was transported to your hospital after suffering a severe brain injury. When I arrived at the hospital I was told that he was in the PICU because the adult ICU was full. G was 27-years-old, but something told me that this was where he was meant to be. And I must tell you, that I am so glad he wound up there. I am writing to you today because I feel compelled to tell someone and everyone just what an amazing group of people you have working there.

From the very first moment my husband and I arrived we were taken aside and were told about his condition. Then the plan for his care was explained to us in terms that we could comprehend. Every detail of his care was gone over, and we were allowed to be with G every minute that we wanted to. Your nurses are angels in scrubs. G’s care was constant and compassionate, gentle and respectful, and all while being completely professional. It so impressed me that they addressed him using his name every time they were about to do something to him or for him. It made it feel like he was more than just a patient, but a friend who needed to be cared for.

One after the other, they not only cared for G but tenderly cared for our entire family. They continuously asked what we needed, answered our questions, and listened to our family stories. They made sure we had a place to sleep, blankets to keep us warm, and a hand to hold while we cried. They even made sure we ate when we often forgot to do that ourselves. During such a horrific time for us their commitment to our care is something I will never forget. There was not a single doctor, nurse, respiratory specialist, social worker, or resident that we interacted with that should not be praised. Every one of them treated us with such care and dedication during our 4 days there. However, I do feel the need to point out a few incredible individuals who tenderly cared for G.

The night nurses’ care for our entire family goes beyond what I could have asked for. We were so very fortunate to have a special nurse assigned to G’s entire stay in the PICU. Her name is Jordan Malatesta. Words cannot explain the gratitude I have for her. For such a young person she showed us strength and compassion every minute of every day. When it came time to make important decisions regarding how to proceed, including our decision to take him off of life support, she was extraordinarily delicate relaying information and answering questions. These bits of information helped us to make a choice that was not only best for G, but also best for us as his parents. Her unwavering support shined through every aspect of her nursing duties. Whether it was as we sat by G’s bedside while they tried various treatments, or how she stayed with G in the operating room as they began the procedure to fulfill his wishes to be an organ donor. Her maturity in handling these difficult situations feels well beyond her years and I could not have asked for someone better suited than herself.

In these last few very taxing days since our time at Tufts, I find myself overwhelmingly grateful to have had a team as supportive and empathetic as yours in the PICU. I hope you know just how remarkable they all are.
