I have known Arlene for over 15 years since I first started working the night shift as a new graduate nurse. As a newbie, I was shy and nervous to give report to some of the day shift nurses. Whenever I found out the day shift nurse was Arlene, I felt less stressed because she always started her shift with a beautiful smile. She's full of compassion and very nurturing for new nurses. She comforted me if I had a bad night and would give me constructive feedback without embarrassing me, and I know she's still doing it to our new nurses after so many years. Arlene always works for the best benefit of her patients and will attend to her patient's needs right away. She's full of compassion, love, and patience. Often, she will receive a difficult assignment because we're confident she can handle the situation appropriately. 

• A patient of hers wrote, “Arlene is an exceptional nurse, very good at explaining things and caring, following up on details, helped making me comfortable. This hospital is lucky to have people like her." 
• Another patient wrote, " When I woke up this morning, I saw Arlene, not only is she professional, but amazingly kind and helpful. She got me through this difficult day. You have been an angel to me today! God bless you!" 

Last Saturday morning, Arlene started her shift with a sick female Covid patient, who had a rough night with low blood pressure. The night shift had called the RRT, a new order received for IVF bolus, and continue to monitor on our unit without transferring to a higher level of care. Arlene notified me of the situation right away after receiving report, we both kept a close eye on this patient. Arlene was constantly calling the attending physician and giving him update, requesting a patient transfer to ICU. As the patient's condition was continuing to decline, Arlene called another RRT and then code blue as the patient went into full cardiac arrest while waiting for an ICU bed to be ready. Arlene started CPR when the code team arrived, she tried so hard to update the team and help transfer the patient to ICU. After this event, she discussed the whole situation with the attending physician to see if she missed anything, if there was anything else she could have done to have a better outcome.
