Her gut told her something was off.
Emily received a patient who just underwent a TAVR procedure. The patient was restless and complaining of pain all over. Emily was able to reassure the patient while keeping her safe from bleeding. It appeared to be a standard post-operative patient until Emily noticed the patient was not as vocal as previously assessed. Her gut told her something was off. She quickly reassessed the patient and found that she was unable to speak and developed right-sided hemiplegia. She activated the Rapid Response protocol without delay, contacted the interventionalist, and transported the patient to CT within 5 min. A clot was discovered in the MCA, and the patient was then transferred to Catheterization Lab for a thrombectomy. Emily was reassuring the patient throughout PACU, CT scan, and pre-thrombectomy procedure - as she was awake and aware the whole time. She also updated the daughter, who was understandably distraught and arranged visitation between them in ICU. Post thrombectomy, Emily resumed her care for the patient in PACU and reassured the patient about the plan of care post-stroke. She transported the patient to ICU and coordinated with the patient's daughter to meet in the room. She explained to the daughter the status of the patient and was able to reunite the family during this trying time. Emily's precise skills and knowledge precipitated the stroke protocol to proceed without hesitation. Her care and compassion allowed the patient and daughter to be reunited and reassured. Because of Emily's critical thinking, interdisciplinary communication, and compassionate patient care, the patient remained calm, stable, and safe throughout her stay in the PACU.
