Jessica offered her phone number and I have phoned her with further positive results.
An 80-year-old patient reports recently having emergency surgery resulting in a colostomy. She has many healthy issues that "have replaced a once vigorous and active life with a loss of abilities and narrow life. I kept adapting and now I have been struggling to recover from the surgery plus a whole new challenge (ostomy).” While inpatient at another facility, a wound nurse and educator gave her instructions on living with a colostomy. Home care followed but she felt "various opinions regarding the nursing supplies caused her confusion and left her overwhelmed."

On her second follow-up with her surgeon she voiced her "confusion and frustration". He listened and then referred her to St. Luke’s "ostomy clinic". She called immediately when she got home and was connected with Jessica, "who was pleasant, friendly, welcoming, and reassuring. Probably you are already aware that Jessica is a valued member of your department and that she has many qualities that make her above the average nurse and teacher. She clearly knows her area of expertise. She is a true professional while simultaneously being warm and caring. She is patient and listens. She does not speak in "should" but rather explains in a pro-con way about features of various supplies."

“When I walked out of there, I was no longer overwhelmed but finally felt I could handle yet another new challenge.” Since then, she has followed up on what she said she would do, even going well beyond the minimum task. “She offered her phone number and I have phoned her with further positive results. I am a retired social worker and have always believed a knowing, caring person can make such a difference in another's life especially when they intervene when the other needs an ear and a hand up. Jessica is that person for me! Thank you so much for hiring Jessica and having her in your unit when I so desperately needed her knowledge and skills. I have thanked Jessica, but that alone is never enough. I wanted you to know the impact that your superior staff has on the average, everyday patients in their time of need.”

This patient letter characterizes the lasting impression Jessica made on this patient and the difference she made for her life change. Amazing job, Jessica!
