Rebekah has the biggest heart and immense compassion for her patients.
Rebekah is one of those nurses who gives 1000% of themselves to the bedside. She has gone to Target and spent her own money on heaps of baby/toddler clothes. That may not seem like a big deal at surface level, but to our unit on HKU, it is. Imagine being a parent and seeing your child with a large surgical incision lining their chest or being terrified to hold/snuggle your baby. Our unit has the ability to dress up our patients in adorable floral onesies, dinosaur tees, or the perfect pair of comfy PJs for a teen. The smile across patients' and parents' faces as we are able to give them a glimpse of "normalcy" amongst the stress of hospitalization is priceless. Rebekah's commitment and passion to this cause is unyielding.
Rebekah also has the biggest heart and immense compassion for her patients. One shift, I was caring for a patient who had been in the hospital for months when my phone alarm started alerting me that my patient was desatting. I ran to the room to find Rebekah and my patient doubled over in the most infectious form of laughter and glee. Before I knew it, the 3 of us were playing a board game when the patient looks at Rebekah and me and says that something he wants for his birthday in the next few weeks was a pair of handcuffs/police kit. Less than an hour passed, and Rebekah had gotten a security officer into the room to show off his handcuffs and tell my patient all the exciting parts about being in law enforcement. I never thought I'd say this but: thank goodness for the face shields. I was tearing up as I watched my patient completely forget about being in the hospital for a brief period and have the biggest smile I'd ever seen. It was so special. Rebekah treats all her patients with compassion and commitment. She has a sought-after skill of making connecting with a patient look easy. I'm grateful to work alongside a nurse like her.
