Christina spent her own money to purchase puzzles, bubbles, and Frozen-themed toys.
Christina Hutcherson embodies the core of nursing through unwavering patience and grace. She marries a perfect balance of clinical competency with compassion and kindness. Most recently, Christina carried for an extremely complex 18-year-old patient with autism. The patient was non-verbal and struggled to communicate with staff in a manner that was not aggressive. Christina stepped up as the role of primary RN for this patient and took care of him multiple days in the ED. She watched his behaviors and non-verbal mannerisms to better understand his needs.
Christina also partnered with psychiatry, case management, and family to develop a personalized and consistent care plan in an unpredictable environment. Christina was able to get the patient's security blanket and iPad from his family to help promote safety. She also reviewed previous hospitalization documentation to garner some of his favorite activities. From there, Christina spent her own money to purchase puzzles, bubbles, and Frozen-themed toys. She worked tirelessly to advocate for appropriate medication management and implemented a reward-based system for his developmental health. Christina is to be credited with helping him transition to a better state of wellness despite the overwhelming emotional and environmental stressors. Christina also joined a complex care meeting to provide valuable knowledge about the patient’s behaviors in efforts to expedite placement outside of the emergency department. Her dedicated efforts have helped to control a tumultuous situation for the patient and the entire emergency department.
