They had a conversation, Joe got him a snack, found a television show he might like, and spent some time watching it with him, and helped him to the restroom when he needed to go again.
As a whole, the ICC gets several cards and complements from families, but Joe stands out! When we receive compliments as a whole, often his name is mentioned as going above and beyond. In the recent past, the bereavement coordinator passed on the following messages:

A brother of a recently deceased patient wanted to let the ICC team know how wonderful they all were and expressed that he was very happy with the care from the nurses, but even more so with the compassion, Joe showed. Everyone exceeded expectations and this family has had a lot of losses recently!

The staff on the ICC were a God Send! Joe was wonderful and went out of his way to make my mom comfortable. I have never seen a group of people that were so kind and caring.

These are just two out of many expressions of gratitude from families where I hear Joe goes above and beyond in providing compassionate care. Recently the ICC got a card and again with Joe’s name on it with a box of Pop-Tarts. Patients also often request to have Joe back the next night or hope he is working, so Joe is doing something right.

One time I was reading Joe’s documentation and it warmed my heart to read of a lonely, maybe slightly forgetful patient that couldn’t sleep and kept hitting the call light to urinate frequently; maybe he had to go but maybe too he wanted company and Joe took the time and went in and sat down with the patient for a while and just visited with him. They had a conversation, Joe got him a snack, found a television show he might like, and spent some time watching it with him, and helped him to the restroom when he needed to go again. But just that act of sitting down with the patient and providing that extra TLC distracted that patient or filled that need for human companionship the patient was possibly needing and it had to make the patient feel valued, less lonely, and less like an ill patient and it sounded like the gentleman enjoyed Joe’s company. Eventually, the patient went to sleep. Joe could have easily just sat at the desk and worked on education or visited with a coworker, but in this moment, instead of just making an appearance when the patient called for help, he provided that extra TLC and that is why I believe he gets so many complements because he is often attentive.

He has told me more than once he loves his job and I think that comes out in the TLC he provides to patients and families. In addition to patient and family complements, I have also received compliments from AOCs and Leaders that say when they call Joe with questions at night he is always kind and willing to help if he can and has those good relatable skills.
