Mikela went way beyond the “job” and was caring, sensitive, and compassionate. And even helped make ‘light’ of things to put us all at ease, including my husband.
What a blessing that this “special nurse” was assigned to my husband the night he was taken by ambulance to Wesley Hillside ER. It was such a scary and stressful experience for him as the patient and for our daughter and me. Mikela was the epitome of professionalism and compassion, including getting tests started, verbalizing all that was going on, and tending to his very serious condition and pain. We knew exactly what was going on and why. And that means everything in a time of crisis and uncertainties. As soon as he was put in a room, I realized in the confusion and chaos, I had left my phone at home! Our daughter had rushed to our home and we followed the ambulance to ER together. She dropped me at the door and she went to find a place to park. I wanted to touch base with her to tell her where to come when I realized I did not have a phone. It was another thing to add extra stress to the situation- and I must confess I felt like I was having a meltdown. Without hesitation, this generous nurse immediately reassured me and gave me her phone to call our daughter. I was awed at her kindness along with her level of expertise the several hours we were in ER until my husband was admitted to the cardiac ICU. She was by our side constantly with information, compassion, and the ability to help us “distress” from the ordeal.

By the time they had a room prepared it was about 10:30 pm. Because it was so late and no visitors allowed at that time, she let us follow her to the ICU floor waiting room so we could be assured my husband was settled in and still doing okay. She visited with the ICU nurse to see if my daughter and I could both see him for just a minute in his room to reassure us he was still doing okay and resting better. This was so appreciated since maybe only one of us might have been allowed in at that hour- we were most grateful to Mikela and the ICU nurse that we were able to stay together and both of us were able to visit briefly with the hospital cardiac doctor. Not only did Mikela want both of us to see my husband and have that confirmation he was settled, but she was concerned for our daughter’s safety and her not be waiting somewhere by herself.

This nurse went way beyond the “job” and was caring, sensitive, and compassionate. And even helped make ‘light’ of things to put us all at ease, including my husband. Lots of people can train and study to be a nurse, but not all can exhibit the genuine caring of this nurse. In a day and age when we see so many folks that have ceased to truly care about their job, our nurses have certainly exhibited a dedication that is unbelievable during this past year. Mikela certainly proves as an example of giving your all and putting others first all the while doing a great job. And I have no doubt she does that with every patient and family.

Folks are always quick to point out the things that others don’t do or do poorly – and that is okay when warranted. But we should be equally as quick to commend those who are great examples of their job/profession. Mikela certainly falls in that category and deserves special recognition for a job more than well done. Thank you for allowing our family the opportunity to recognize and say thanks to this very special nurse. Both my husband and I have been to Wesley Hillside ER on previous occasions and have been pleased and impressed with the quality of care from all of the doctors and nurses, but Mikela was exceptional in her level of care to us. She made a huge difference to my family at a stressful and upsetting time. We celebrate her and thank God she was there for us that night.
