Cara never wavered as an advocate for the patient. I would walk into the unit and see her talking to the child, reading books, holding, and generally soothing the child until calm.
Cara cared for one of our long-term patients in the NICU for many months. This was a particularly difficult situation, and Cara handled it with grace and care. She never lost sight of what is best for the patient. She took this journey on knowing it was going to be difficult from day one. She never wavered as an advocate for the patient. I would walk into the unit and see her talking to the child, reading books, holding, and generally soothing the child until calm. This often prevented narcotics from being used. The child often responded to Cara's touch and voice. I have worked with Cara for many years. She is a skilled NICU nurse, but also a gentle, calm presence in the midst of chaos. In this situation, I saw a holistic approach to the patient and the family. She showed compassion and grace to everyone involved. She will forever be in my heart after watching the care she provided this patient and the family.
