Der brought him coloring books and snacks because she recognized he was a young adult and needed autonomy and validation.
Der comes to work with a positive attitude and a “teamwork approach” to her nursing care. During the Covid pandemic on 5C, Der took care of a 20 year old behavioral health patient diagnosed with Covid. This patient required frequent emotional support, safety checks and a nonjudgmental perspective. The patient did not have coping skills and struggled with feeling safe in his room. Some of the staff felt fearful and unsafe around him. Der treated him like any other patient and respected his needs. He would ask for her by name and Der would not hesitate to answer his many calls. She spent extra time talking with him which increased his comfort with the hospital setting. She brought him coloring books and snacks because she recognized he was a young adult and needed autonomy and validation. The patient cried and hugged Der, thanking her for making him feel heard. Der is an exceptional team member on 5C and the floor wouldn’t be the same without her. We love her!
