As a parent, I find it hard to leave my daughter on the ward but when Jemma is on I know I can as she understands M in a way that a lot of people don’t.
I have a severe Non communicating Autistic daughter. Who also has Cystic fibrosis. As you can imagine we find hospital admissions difficult, as is a change. But on more than one occasion, Jemma has made these stays a lot more manageable. Jemma meets all my daughter’s needs and understands her. For example, when my daughter underwent open-heart surgery, she arranged for us to be put on to L40, as this was what M was used to. My daughter M loves water so Jemma always makes sure she has some sort of water facility as she understands that’s what calms M down. On a recent admission, my daughter’s port had been accessed three times in 12 hours shift. Due to M's nature, she always knocking it. Jemma comes on shift, dresses it, and it’s lasted the full admission. This might only seem like small things to you but they make a big difference in M's life. I could go on and on about her. As a parent, I find it hard to leave my daughter on the ward but when Jemma is on I know I can as she understands M in a way that a lot of people don’t. She has gone above and beyond to help with the care of my daughter. Nothing is too much and there is literally nothing she can’t do when presented with a task or problem concerning M and always completes her necessary care from start to finish. I take comfort in the fact that Jemma is an extremely caring and passionate nurse and caters to M’s difficult individual needs. I have noticed whenever Jemma is on shift she doesn’t seem to stop and the ward runs like clockwork. She really is the heart and soul of the ward and makes our admissions a lot easier when she’s on shift I couldn’t wish for a more caring, understanding pro-active nurse to be looking after my daughter. Jemma practices high standards of care when looking after M and I don’t think this should go unnoticed.
