Megan embraces the concept of a healing environment and strives to care for patients holistically – Mind-Body-Spirit.
Megan embraces and brings the Zielony Institute Nursing Practice Model to life in the clinical environment. She is a living and breathing example of what every nurse is, could, and should be. She strives to achieve the best patient experiences and patient outcomes by delivering on the promise of world-class care. Megan demonstrated her commitment to our patients and quality outcomes when caring for an extremely complex patient.

This patient created multiple challenges to nursing physically and emotionally. Communicating with this patient was one of the most difficult challenges. The patient was blind, nonverbal, with cognitive impairments. The patient was intubated and repeated attempts to extubate failed. The patient kept failing the SAT/SBT trials, in part, because of the difficulty with communication. The patient would hold his breath and become agitated which increased the patient’s HR.

Megan embraces the concept of a healing environment and strives to care for patients holistically – Mind-Body-Spirit. She set her sights on trying to communicate effectively in hopes of calming the patient to ultimately extubate. She updated the patient’s POA. She reviewed the plan of care, medications, and support resources. She received permission from the POA to contact the patient’s homecare nurse. His homecare nurse was appreciative of being contacted to help and suggested that someone with a familiar voice be with him as we try to extubate. Megan shared this with the team as it would benefit the patient to hear a familiar voice. She also put his favorite TV shows on.

One of his friends from his home came in to provide that familiar voice. All of these interventions succeeded in having a calming effect on this patient. He began to rest, and his HR improved. The plan of care was communicated to each RN at handoff. This is one example of how Megan conducts her practice and successfully connects with patients and families every time she comes to work. Her values are intact and exemplify Cleveland Clinic values and are reflected in the care she delivers and the outcomes she produces. She made a meaningful difference in this patient’s recovery.
