Katie received this thank you note from a still-grieving mother expressing her gratitude for the care she provided her late son.
Upon learning of a 24-year-old patient’s treatment details, Katie McCraney was initially unsure if we would be able to take care of the patient. She selflessly took the patient as a personal mission, coming in early and often times staying late. Unsurprisingly, she grew close to the patient and formed a bond. The strong family support around this young man was very impressive, with many family members with matching t-shirts and supporting him in his treatment visits.

After several months, his care gained the added complexity of the COVID-19 pandemic. His supportive family respectfully followed the guideline and never once challenged the visitor policy. Unfortunately, after approximately one year, this young man lost the battle with his disease. While only a couple attended his funeral due to COVID restrictions, the team sent flowers.

A little later, Katie received this thank you note from a still-grieving mother expressing her gratitude for the care she provided her late son. The mother later told Katie that the only reason she was able to make it through her son’s care during COVID without worrying was that she knew he was under her care and getting everything he needed. Additionally, on the first day of nurse’s week, Katie received a text message from the mother stating, “Happy Nurses Week to the best nurse ever!” Following is the letter from the patient’s mother:

“Dear Sweet Nurses,
Thank you all for the wonderful care you provided H during his year and a half battle with cancer. Each of you shared a special gift with him as you lovingly did your job taking care to give your best service as a nurse. In addition, as a Mom, I felt overwhelmed with the wonderful kindness you showed H each day he was in your care. Please know all you do for others does not go unnoticed! Thank you for the beautiful flowers you shared with our family in Memory of H. In the midst of this period of mourning, we are comforted by the love and support of friends like you. We sincerely appreciate all your kindness."
