Susan leads and educates the staff on our unit in caring for patients with intellectual disabilities. She has deep empathy for these patients and their families.
Susan is the kind of person who will do anything for anyone because she genuinely cares. When she heard that one of her colleagues who takes the bus to work had hurt her foot, she started taking her home at night to prevent her from walking home from the bus stop. This is just one of many examples of kindness that Susan displays to those around her. Susan leads and educates the staff on our unit in caring for patients with intellectual disabilities. She has deep empathy for these patients and their families, as she raised a son who also has intellectual disabilities. We currently have a patient on our unit who has been with us for 128 days and counting, and Susan never tires of the behaviors and outbursts this patient has. She has a deep understanding of what this patient’s true capacity is and knows how to find the balance between using her “mom voice” to set limits, and giving positive reinforcement, even in the toughest of moments. Susan is a resource for all of us and spoke recently at a staff meeting about her previous life experiences relating to our patient population, offering support to help all of us be more resilient when we are tested by difficult patients. Susan is often specifically requested by our psychiatry team to work with these patients due to the great relationship she builds with them. Susan has a heart of gold and truly cares about everyone around her. As a bedside nurse, Susan goes the extra mile every day that she comes to work. I am proud to work alongside her.
