I have observed Maureen's compassion at the bedside with patients suffering painful, life-altering wounds and holding the hands of new ostomates as they struggled to accept their new body image.
Through watching her composure and empathy for our mutual patients, I felt inspired to consider wound care nursing. After sharing my interest in the discipline, she began mentoring me through the process and after a few turns in events, this is where the story begins. Over the past 40+ years of nursing, Maureen has practiced as an OR/Surgical nurse, she has been a home health care nurse and supervisor, a central referral nurse, an out-patient wound clinic nurse, and yes, even a school nurse. I have observed her compassion at the bedside with patients suffering painful, life-altering wounds and holding the hands of new ostomates as they struggled to accept their new body image. I have heard her be the voice for patients who needed one. She is not easily intimidated, and I have witnessed her veracity in ensuring patients receive appropriate care. She has fought tough battles both personally and professionally, but as her friend and former co-worker explains, “she doesn’t give up until the problem is solved.” Maureen has encouraged, educated, and mentored me and many others, not only in wound care and nursing but in humanity and what it means to genuinely care and to be present for others. I am moved by her strong faith in God. She knows the importance of having God in everything we do. Yes, Maureen is an icon in her field, she is a team leader and a team player, an advocate, a teacher, and a trailblazer. She sets a high bar for modern nursing. But it is through her example that we may carry on her legacy in providing exceptional care to our patients and our community and in doing so, revealing the healing presence of God.

Note: This is Maureen's 2nd DAISY Award!
