Lorraine took care of a patient experiencing a fetal demise and her family for three days. This requires every skill as a nurse and every bit of compassion and empathy as a person.
Lorraine Grewal-Skerry is a skillful, 100% compassionate nurse. I am a registered nurse on Maternity at NMC. I have worked directly with Lorraine for many years in many situations. Lorraine not only possesses excellent assessment and clinical skills but also possesses a gift of patient relationship building that is hers alone. Through her kindness, humor, and even her gift of gab, she provides comfort to her patients.
This spring, I witnessed Lorraine demonstrate extraordinary compassion in patient care. Lorraine took care of a patient experiencing a fetal demise and her family for three days. This requires every skill as a nurse and every bit of compassion and empathy as a person. Lorraine brought the best of herself to work and gave it to her patient! And the family! I offered to care for this patient on her day of discharge. Lorraine said no. Lorraine wanted to be there for her and her family and to take her out of the hospital. This is one more difficult time for grieving parents, going home without their baby. It is only the beginning in their journey of grief. Lorraine accompanied this dear mother with a warm arm to hang on to.
Lorraine made a meaningful difference in a patient’s hospital stay, her discharge, and her life. This patient’s family member wrote a beautiful letter of gratitude to NMC and the Mother-Baby Unit. All staff was recognized, Lorraine of course, was one of them. Lorraine reached out to this mother after her discharge. This patient and her baby are not forgotten. Thoughts of this mother and her baby will always be with Lorraine.
