On several occasions, Starla has offered to pay for moms to attend a mother’s conference that she is passionate about.
Starla is truly an inspiration to all. She’s not only a great nurse but an amazing person. I’ve known her for several years but have only had the pleasure to work side by side with her for about a month now and she is an exceptional co-worker. She follows our RISE values without even trying as it comes naturally to her. In the short amount of time that I’ve got to work with her, I’ve witnessed a truly caring and compassionate nurse. She is a true advocate for all of the patients that she encounters, no matter the setting. She goes above and beyond educating patients and making sure that it’s understandable for them. Even if the patient is here for one thing, she will educate them on several things while she’s caring for them. Just hearing the things that she does for her patients is unbelievable.

For examples of her kindness, she made soup and took it to a family that were all down with COVID. She has purchased Brita Water Pitchers for patients to encourage them to drink more water. On several occasions, she has offered to pay for moms to attend a mother’s conference that she is passionate about. This offer isn’t only to co-workers, but to patients that she has just met as well. When I tell someone of the great things she does, they too have their own amazing story about her. She is a true nurse of compassion, love, and faith.

I have had the immense pleasure of working with Starla at the Hannibal Free Clinic for the past 4 years. Every day, her passion is inspiring, her work ethic is unwavering, and her joy for helping others is unmatched. She treats each individual patient with such compassion, meets them where they are at in their life, and does anything in her power to help her patients. She is personable beyond measure, not only with patients, but with everyone she meets.

One specific example that I can think of is that a patient was about to be fined for not having the resources to keep her yard mowed to the acceptable city requirements. She knew that this patient would not have the money for the fine and being fined would not solve the patient's predicament. She went over after work and off the clock and mowed the patient's yard not once, not twice, but several times. This gave the patient time to find a long-term solution to their problem and prevented the patient from being fined. This example is only one of many times that she has gone above and beyond for patients, both professionally and personally, to help them live happier, healthier lives. She develops a rapport with each of her patients, relating to them and getting to know them in a manner that puts the patient at the forefront of their health. She empowers patients in their lives every day, whether that is increasing their physical activity, taking their medications, making dietary changes, going back for their GED, quitting smoking, and much more. Without a doubt, she is an amazing nurse and person, whose patients are incredibly lucky to work with her.

I had the privilege of working with Starla in the COVID infusion center, and was very impressed by her kindness, compassion, knowledge, and skill that she exhibits in her practice. She trained me for the first shift that I worked administering COVID antibody infusions, and she was welcoming and kind from the moment I met her. I really appreciated her taking the time to explain the process of the administrations and documentation so thoroughly and with such warmth. It can be intimidating to float to another unit, and she made me feel so comfortable.

While working with her, I was so impressed with the education that she provided to all of the patients. She took the time to speak with patients about their concerns whether they were related to the infusion, family issues, or nutrition. She would take time to tell young mothers about conferences that are available to help them feel cared for and provide valuable information to their specific phase of life. I was really blessed and inspired by my time with her.
