They work together as one for the benefit of our patients and each other. They are a credit to our profession.
Every Nurse in the Infusion Department is amazing, and every day demonstrates the qualities of Nurses. Each one brings strength, care, positive spirits, and dedication every day to the people they serve, the unit they work in, and the profession they have chosen. It is an honor, privilege, and joy to work with them.
Nurturing: Today I observed Nicole Janssen sit and comfort a patient that was upset. She kindly gave this gentleman her time and attention, truly hearing what he had to say and supporting him with kindness and strength. I observed LeAnn Johnson completing assignments for the day with consideration of another nurse's injury. I have observed, Nicole, LeAnn, Amber, Shawn, Jenni, Kate, Deanna, Marcia, Melinda, Becky, and Janlyn offer help to others every day. They nurture and care about each other as well as their patients.
Understanding: I have observed Amber, with her quiet, gentle demeanor, discuss eating fresh fruits and vegetables with a neutropenic patient, offering an understanding of the patient’s desire to have those things in his diet. I have observed Shawn discuss cancer effects with a patient with understanding because he has been there. I have observed Marica teach a student nurse with kindness, respect, and understanding.
Respectful: Each nurse in this unit is respectful of our patients and each other. I do not ever hear gossip and negativity that can take over a unit. I have heard Janlyn ask for help and had two or three of the others try to help her. I have observed LeAnn mentor students, with the whole team as backup. I have observed Amber rearrange a room to make it better for her patient.
Skilled: Several Infusion nurses are certified in Oncology, LeAnn Johnson, Deanna Piper, Kate Sayles, Jenni Sayles, Marcia Limoges, Melinda Straub, Janlyn Robinson, and Julie Larson. This demonstrates dedication and skill to their profession. The others are obtaining the needed education and experience to apply for certification. Amber, Nicole and Dottie have their chemotherapy certification cards.
Empathetic: It is not often the entire team has such respect, trust, dedication, and empathy toward the patients and each other. I have observed Shawn and Nicole work together to find information for someone who called the wrong number! It was very cool to see them find the information and assist the caller instead of telling them they called the wrong number. They both felt empathy toward this person being transferred from department to department instead of just trying to help them.
Supportive: The entire unit is supportive of every patient and each other. I have observed Kate work with scheduling staff to fix an appointment for a patient. I have observed Shawn, Becky, and Melinda give first-time chemotherapy patients education about the drugs, side effects, and tips to prevent side effects. I have had the privilege of observing these nurses go above and beyond to make every patient comfortable, perform their job with safety first, following guidelines, and evidence-based protocols. Every one of these nurses deserves to be acknowledged for the superior care they provide to the patients and to each other. They work together as one for the benefit of our patients and each other. They are a credit to our profession.
