I've watched Jackie run a code seamlessly. I've watched her collaborate and clarify physician directives to ensure safe quality care was provided. I've watched her hold the hands of patients and families and cry her eyes out as they let go of their loved ones.
Jackie has worked at Samaritan for 33 years. I believe all but 1 or 2 of these years have all been devoted to the ICU. She has always been a leader throughout the organization delivering patient-centered care. She is well respected by her peers and physicians. Today we were very short staff in Interventional Radiology had a very busy schedule and all calls for additional staff had been exhausted. I went to the staffing office and looked at the unit schedules. I noted a hopeful option of having an ICU nurse come to assist based on the patient census and scheduled staff. This is not within their clinical practice area but I made a call anyway to see if someone would volunteer. I spoke with Jackie and asked her if she would be able to come and assist us in CT for contrast administration and assessment. Jackie's reply was "I don't see why not". She has given contrast hundreds of times throughout her career. She said, "I'd just need someone to show me the routine down there". Without hesitation, Jackie came to CT was provided with an overview of patient flow by one of the IR nurses and began her day by providing a warm welcome to our first patient starting her IV and administering her contrast. Her positive approach impacted the entire department and immediately promoted a reassuring atmosphere.
A couple of weeks ago Jackie came in on her day off to assist us in CT again after all calls for additional staff were exhausted. She didn't have to, she just did as she always does. Jackie has always been a nurse whom I've looked up to. Despite the worse days she always was reassuring and just made a complex event look easy. I've watched Jackie run a code seamlessly. I've watched her collaborate and clarify physician directives to ensure safe quality care was provided. I've watched her hold the hands of patients and families and cry her eyes out as they let go of their loved ones.
When I acknowledged Jackie's willingness to help us in Interventional Radiology the nursing supervisor added yet another example of why Jackie is a DAISY Nurse. The supervisor told me that they had a patient a while back in maternity who needed a central line. The nurses in that area were not familiar with assisting with this. Jackie immediately responded to lend her assistance to ensure this mother to be got her central line the provider had assistance/guidance and the maternity staff were supported. That's just the nurse Jackie is. She always puts the patient first.
During this very challenging pandemic, Jackie was one of our leaders for the COVID ICU never shunning away but rather reporting each day for her assignment with a smile and willingness to conquer our sickest patients including those suffering from Covid. Her outlook and actions were ones that only a strong dedicated nurse could offer. She cares for all patients as if they are her own family and she would definitely be the nurse I would request to care for me and my family. She also precepts and mentors new nurses and new graduates to help ensure their success and support their young careers. She willingly shares her knowledge and skills to promote our profession. She is a mentor, co-worker, friend, and inspiration for all. She will always put the needs of you and yours above hers. She manages to provide safe quality care for the 12-hour shift that ultimately impacts lives forever. She is resilient. Jackie defines what a DAISY Nurse is.
