Austin really listened to this family and supported them.
Austin demonstrates extraordinary talent in the delivery of compassionate care for all of his patients and families. For this particular assignment, he was taking care of a Spanish-speaking family with a child who has a seizure disorder. Unfortunately, this child had been readmitted for uncontrolled seizures. Austin, who speaks Spanish as a second language, was able to utilize his knowledge to develop a relationship with this family to help understand what was happening that their child continued to have seizures even after significant education with interpreter services during prior admissions. He really listened to this family and supported them. He quickly developed a rapport and through this, he discovered that they did speak Spanish but it was a different dialect. In this particular case finding the appropriate type of Spanish interpreter was very important to aid in this family’s understanding of their child's diagnosis and medications- something that had been missed through previous admissions. Austin worked closely with other departments and arranged appropriate interpreter services with the family and the team to make sure they felt comfortable and truly did understand how to manage their child's diagnosis and medications. Austin has a special way of establishing connections with families and this is just one example of that.
