Nick spent the time with him to talk through his concerns and utilized his sense of humor to lighten the mood a bit. The patient thanked Nick for his bedside manner.
It's hard to choose just one example of how Nick goes above and beyond for his patients every day. The first example is when a friend of mine came into the ER and needed a spinal tap. She was terrified and Nick took the time to explain everything to her and make sure that she was comfortable. He checked in more frequently than can ever really be expected. My friend went on to tell me that Nick was the best nurse that she had ever had (she has had more than her fair share of hospital visits and is generally very picky about her care).

The next example comes from a patient who seemed to be in an obvious strain of bad luck. One bad thing after another seemed to be happening to this man. Nick asked for my assistance with a Foley catheter for this man and throughout the whole process, Nick validated and addressed every single one of his concerns taking his time to make sure that the patient was doing well. The patient was very clearly under an abundance of emotional distress, in addition to the medical reasons that brought him to the hospital. Nick spent the time with him to talk through his concerns and utilized his sense of humor to lighten the mood a bit. The patient thanked Nick for his bedside manner and after Nick left the room the patient asked me to make sure that Nick knew how much he was appreciated.

As a final stand-out instance of how Nick makes a difference every day, I'll leave it at this. We have a fairly large homeless population that we see coming through the doors of our ED. Nick went above and beyond by not only helping a homeless patient with medical needs but also making sure that his social needs were taken care of. Nick even sent him on his way with a few homemade cookies. The look of pure joy on the patient's face said it all.

The days that I have the privilege of working alongside Nick are my favorite days in the ER. Every complaint, question, or task from a patient gets addressed when Nick is there. He goes out of his way to make sure that patients and their families understand what is happening and he takes the time to listen to every concern that they have no matter how small it may seem. It is an honor to call Nick my coworker and if I were ever in an emergency medical situation, I would want him to be my nurse.
