The most meaningful act of kindness Mason performed was to arrange for me to go outside.
When I was admitted to the hospital in septic shock combined with an advanced bacterial infection, I was frightened and very unsure of my outcome. Living with metastatic breast cancer, you see, makes me painfully aware of my body’s limited ability to fight infection. During my six day stay, many kind and compassionate nurses cared for me in some of the most harrowing times of my existence and I am grateful to the entire staff in the efforts to ensure I would recover to go home.
Mason stands out because of the little extras. When I was able to get up and walk, he would walk with me, and we would discuss my progress and what goals I would need to accomplish to improve. He welcomed my questions gladly and if he didn’t have the answer, researched and got back to me. The most meaningful act of kindness Mason performed was to arrange for me to go outside. I was at a point in my stay where I was feeling confined, by my bed, my room, and the limited space I was allowed to walk. This was all wearing on me in a negative way. I just needed to be outside, briefly to breathe fresh air and feel the sun on my skin so I asked Mason if he could arrange this. He responded, “Let me see what I can do.” Later that afternoon we walked out into an enclosed courtyard and sat for a few minutes enjoying the outdoors. I believe this was a pivotal moment in my recovery.
