Performing sternal rubs, Tanya was able to slightly arouse him, getting small gasps of air. While she continued sternal rubs, she instructed the father how to give rescue breathing.
Tanya McClatchey, home care RN, arrived at her patient's home to find out as soon as she entered the home, her patient's son had coded. Tanya promptly had a family member call 911 while she immediately began assessing their son. It was reported by the family their son had a history of drug abuse and she immediately suspected this to be a drug overdose event. He was found with a pulse and agonal breathing. Performing sternal rubs, she was able to slightly arouse him, getting small gasps of air. While she continued sternal rubs, she instructed the father how to give rescue breathing. EMS arrived, report was provided to EMS of this being a suspected overdose situation and after 3 doses of Narcan, he began to stabilize.

I am a firm believer that God places us where we are needed in life and I am thankful He placed her at this home to help this person and their family. We face a world that struggles with drug addiction and I am certain she was there to help save this man to hopefully one day overcome his addiction. The man's father could not thank Tanya enough for her heroic efforts done on this day, as he too has a 17-year-old son who needs him here. I know in our profession, situations just like this are what we prepare ourselves for. However, in home care, we do not have the additional staff as hospitals do for when someone codes (other nurses or doctors). We must immediately assess, plan, implement life-saving measures with little to no resources, and Tanya did just that! I wanted to recognize Tanya today for putting her skills into motion, handling it calmly, professionally, and with God's will - potentially saving this man's life.
