Ten days ago, I had open-heart surgery for a blockage in my heart and lung. Two days ago I found out the growth was cancerous. Last night, I woke up at 1:00 a.m. feeling incredible sadness. I just needed someone to talk with. I hit my buzzer and asked Cathy if she could come in and just talk with me. She came right in and we spent the next half hour talking. She truly listened to me. She held my hand and made me feel like I was much more than a patient; I was a person worthy of her respect and care. She let me cry and shed a few tears with me. When she left, I felt so calm and was able to sleep through the rest of the night. Nurse Cathy is so much more than a medical person. She’s a compassionate woman who understands how to treat the soul in the darkness of night as well as the body. Thank you, Nurse Cathy.
