Diana was assigned an extremely ill patient with interstitial lung disease. Patient sats were in the high 80s - low 90s. She was maxed out on BiPap and very anxious. SWAT nurse came over to see the patient and the physician was called. The patient was given Ativan and CXR and ABGs were ordered. CXR showed worsening of lung disease. The physician spoke with the patient and her husband, explained her prognosis, and informed them the next step was intubation but she would never be coming off it. Both the patient and husband stated that it was what they wanted and knew the risks, but the patient wanted to live. It was very emotional for everyone. At that time the patient was kept on the floor and a short time later the husband went home. After the husband left, the patient requested the nurse to call her son in Australia. Diana called her son and was able to communicate to him what the patient was saying. The patient wanted her son to know that this was the last time she would be talking to him and she wanted him to know how much she loved him. The son stated that he loved her too and what a wonderful mother she was. By doing this, Diana was able to give the mother and son some comfort during this sad time in their life. Diana continued to care for the patient throughout the night making sure the patient was comfortable. By morning it was clear that the patient would have to be intubated. Instead of just passing the patient off to the oncoming nurse, Diana stayed and assisted with the patient's care until she was intubated and transferred to ICU. Additionally, prior to intubation, Diana and the oncoming nurse took turns holding the patient’s hands so she wouldn’t be alone. Diana is a wonderful nurse. She always shows compassion and dignity to her patients. 3D/5D are very lucky to have her.
