Little by little, she built rapport with this patient. With the rotating nurses and providers and lack of guardian presence at the bedside, Christin made sure she was one constant this child had during his stay.
Christin puts out an effort that goes above and beyond for every single one of her patients. Care for this one child is an excellent example. This child had extreme behavior issues and an undecided home life situation. She spent hours every day in the patient’s room changing his ostomy appliance. She seamlessly navigated his changing ostomy stoma and peristomal skin along with patient and family requests to choose an appropriate ostomy appliance system.

Little by little, she built rapport with this patient. With the rotating nurses and providers and lack of guardian presence at the bedside, Christin made sure she was one constant this child had during his stay here at Children’s Mercy. Eventually, the patient began to trust her. There were times when this patient even requested Christin come and see him. The one week she was gone, he said he missed her. Christin even bought a dinosaur badge holder because the patient loves dinosaurs. She made sure his rewards after good behavior during bedside procedures were toys he liked. She got him a small toy dinosaur and toy racecar.

Christin actively takes part in his care and plans for his future care. She partakes in weekly tele-meetings to ensure a safe and effective discharge plan. Christin has been this child’s top advocate and a consistent face through this child’s entire admission. Christin created the safe and nurturing environment this child so needed. This level of care is amazing and truly inspiring to the rest of us who have the privilege of working alongside her.
