While making sure I was medically safe, comfortable, and informed, Mary also spoke to me about spirituality, the power of positive thinking, and how to listen to our bodies.
There are few if any positive outcomes when one is diagnosed with cancer, as I was in 2020, but meeting nurse Mary Solomon turned out to be one of them. In what was already one of the most chaotic, stressful, and challenging years of my (and the entire world's) life, I was then tasked with fighting cancer during a global pandemic. I was afraid, apprehensive, and entirely unsure of what to expect.

When I arrived at the Winchester Cancer Center at the Oncology and Hematology department for my first treatment, I was alone. Despite the demands and pace of her job, Mary was able to quickly identify that I was nervous, and proceeded to immediately make me feel calmer and safer. She took the time to speak with me about coping and living with cancer, not just the scientific realities of my diagnosis. Many medical professionals had spoken to me about cancer, but not necessarily about how to live and manage the disease. While making sure I was medically safe, comfortable, and informed, she also spoke to me about spirituality, the power of positive thinking, and how to listen to our bodies. These conversations helped me get through long treatments, in addition to knowing exactly what was coming next and why, which she knew alleviated my anxiety.

Mary knew exactly what I needed as a human being, not just a patient, and that is why she is entirely deserving of and exemplifies the qualities celebrated in this award. She gave me the hope and stamina to face what lies ahead and have faith, even under the most challenging circumstances.
