Amber recognized this as being far outside of our family-centered care standards and immediately started to rectify this disservice to the family.
Amber Ball is an amazing resource to this hospital both as a floor nurse and as a night shift nursing supervisor. She always goes above and beyond for staff, patients and families. This was very evident in a very difficult situation that presented to the emergency department. Unfortunately, we deal with death and dying far more than we would ever like, but working here at Nationwide Children's Hospital, we all have made the commitment to be present during these most difficult of times.
This particular early morning we had to care for an infant who arrived in cardiac arrest. We were unable to revive the child and needed to move on to post-mortem care. Amber arrived to the unit to provide support on this morning and complete all of the contacts and paperwork that go along with this difficult outcome. She received an unusual request from the detective working the case to keep the family in the dark about the outcome of our resuscitation efforts until he was able to arrive, as the family did not arrive with the patient. Amber recognized this as being far outside of our family-centered care standards and immediately started to rectify this disservice to the family. She started making calls to the coroner to try and expedite their assuming care of the patient so that they could override the detective's directive. She also very professionally and assertively communicated to the officers present at the bedside that this was an injustice to the family and could not be allowed to stand.
Amber worked diligently until she got the results the family deserved. The team was gathered and the family was given the news along with the support they needed in this difficult situation. I would like Amber to be recognized for her hard work and amazing advocacy for this patient and family.
