On behalf of the entire L&D team, we would like to recognize  Maki Jerden. We had a very high-risk patient whom we ended up having to do her scheduled c/s 12 days early. This patient has had over 30 abdominal surgeries and has a colostomy bag due to irritable bowel disease. Our patients in L&D NEVER have colostomies. Even though the patient herself is very well versed in taking care of her colostomy, she was completely anesthetized from her umbilicus down because she just had her baby a few moments before. Due to the manipulation that occurs during a c/s, her colostomy bag came off. We had no supplies in the OR and no one with the expertise to replace it. The patient's husband was in the NICU with their new baby. Of course, this is early in the evening but by chance, Maki was still in her office when our lead ran to her office for advice. Maki dropped what she was doing immediately, grabbed supplies, and came to the OR where the patient still was. She treated the patient with dignity and respect and quickly cleaned, sized, and replaced the colostomy bag with a fresh one she brought. The patient was relieved and grateful for the swift action of Maki. Maki also taught the L&D nurses what to do. Maki then said for the lead to put in an eval request and she will see her tomorrow to make sure we are doing everything we need to do.

Maki showed all of the virtues that we value at TMMC. She helped a new mom to have a normal birthing experience without the focus being her complications. She helped her colleagues by jumping into action and doing what needed to be done. She was humble, graceful, and kind. She went above and beyond to provide the best care for this patient. Maki is a DAISY Nurse and she makes me so proud to work with nurses like her.
