Bethany on many levels showed compassion, empathy, selflessness, and trust to this patient.
Bethany is a new nurse in the Emergency Department. She always comes to work with a positive attitude and a smile on her face. She is eager to learn and is willing to take on any challenge.
On this day, Bethany showed compassion, empathy, trust, selflessness to her patient and the patient’s baby. Bethany’s patient arrived in the department by EMS with a baby in tow. It appeared that the patient was under the influence. Bethany provided the patient with excellent care and concern for her and the baby’s well-being. Prior to discharge the patient called a friend/family member to come and pick her and the baby up. Bethany walked the patient out to the parking lot and realized that her ride was also under the influence and did not let the patient nor the baby get in the car. Bethany escorted the patient and baby back into the facility taking appropriate actions to handle the situation outside. The patient then contacted her sister to come and pick her and the baby up. Upon the sister’s arrival Bethany escorted the patient and baby out to the sister’s car only to notice that there was no car seat for the baby. Bethany went to her car and took her car seat out to lend to the patient in order for the baby to be transported home safely. Police agreed to go to the home and bring her car seat back.
Bethany on many levels showed compassion, empathy, selflessness, and trust to this patient. Many of us discharge the patient and let them walk out the door. Bethany was relentless in seeing that this patient and baby had a safe ride home. She was faced with many obstacles and continued to do what was best for the patient and baby.
