Sindy is a perfect example of why nursing is the most trusted profession. This nurse is not only honest and trustworthy, but she is also caring and exemplifies Parkland’s CIRCLES every day. This nurse demonstrates COMPASSION to both her patients and co-workers. Every interaction with her patients is filled with patience allowing them to feel truly cared for and listened to.

One day, this nurse was caring for a DNR patient who passed during her shift. This nurse ensured the patient was comfortable until her passing and attended to not just the patient but the family as well. The patient passed surrounded by family and loved ones with no signs of pain or discomfort. The family voiced comfort in seeing their loved one cared for with such dedication.

This nurse also shows COMPASSION to her co-workers. She was one of the first to welcome me and help me feel at home when I was a brand-new nurse on this unit. As a new nurse, every day was scary, overwhelming, and unexpected, but knowing I had someone whom I could go to without judgment made the days go by more smoothly. This nurse is also always willing to give a listening ear when anyone, myself included, vents to her after a rough day.

Sindy's INTEGRITY and RESPECT are seen through her attention to detail, dedicated patient-centered care, excellent communication skills, and clinical knowledge. She puts the patient’s safety above all, always ensuring her patients are taken care of and looking up policies/procedures when new situations occur on the floor. She ensures her patients feel respected by giving them privacy and advocating for them, giving them a voice. This nurse always keeps her patients informed and involved in their care.

She also shows RESPECT towards her teammates, always treats everyone fairly, and makes them feel appreciated. This nurse is the definition of teamwork. She displays COLLABORATION when she works both as a charge or staff nurse. She is not afraid to jump into any situation, answers call lights for all patients, even if they are not her own, and assists with Spanish-speaking patients/visitors. She is quick to respond and help her colleagues at any time.

She is dependable. I once had a patient who required a BERT call for attempting to hurt himself as well as multiple staff members. Before the BERT team arrived, this nurse who was on opposite sides of the unit, heard about the emergency and ran to assist. Thanks to her and other staff members, both the patient and staff were kept safe.

Another example of COLLABORATION demonstrated was when her co-worker’s patient was found to have a large bowel movement while they were sitting in the chair. This nurse knew her co-worker was at lunch, so she not only cleaned the patient but gave them a bath and assisted them back to bed.

Apart from these examples, this nurse is always willing to help, will check in on her colleagues frequently, and assist anyone who is overwhelmed or running behind. She demonstrates LEADERSHIP and STEWARDSHIP in her role as a charge nurse, a preceptor, as well as volunteering to be on multiple committees including our units UBC and PUPS. This nurse does education as it relates to PUPS and better skin care for our floor’s patients. She is also an amazing preceptor to both new nurses as well as student nurses. All her preceptees have stated feeling heard and command this nurse for her patience and excellent patient care. This nurse has stayed after her shift to talk with her preceptees and address any issues or concerns they had throughout the day, always trying to teach and make them feel more confident in their work.

Overall, this nurse demonstrates EXCELLENCE in her everyday practice. Nursing is not just a job, it’s a calling, and this can be seen in Sindy. I am honored to work with her. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
