Though a referral wasn’t recommended, Robin followed her instincts and took it upon herself as a mandated reporter to make the report.
A 17-year-old patient was brought to our Emergency Department suffering obvious signs of neglect. After a thorough investigation and treatment of the acute medical concerns, the team then started to work on a safe discharge plan. Robin took it upon herself to advocate for the patient to ensure that the present situation he was currently dealing with would not happen again. During the investigation, it was noted that the child’s mother had an open DFCS case against her for similar circumstances. We attempted to reach out to her, and she initially refused to come and get the child, thus prompting more red flags. Robin immediately contacted CM/SW and asked for a referral to DFCS. Though a referral wasn’t recommended, Robin followed her instincts and took it upon herself as a mandated reporter to make the report.

Ultimately the child was discharged to an appropriate and safe place. DFCS stated they would continue their investigation. I firmly believe that Robin acted as a true patient advocate. She went above and beyond her normal duties as a charge nurse in order to help this minor. While talking to Robin about the patient it was apparent that it was eating her up inside. She really wanted the best for him.
