Ms. Reese used excellent communication skills and redirection to get her into the bathroom and into the shower.
I would like to recognize Tracy Reese for modeling empathy and demonstrating a caring attitude in all situations. She cared for a female veteran with dementia who had a history of disruptive behaviors, including aggression related to personal cares. Each day over the three day stretch, Ms. Reese ensured the veteran had personal cares completed, such as cleaning up with a washcloth when she appeared sweaty and performing oral cares. During one shift, she entered the room and found the veteran covered in liquid stool. Ms. Reese calmly and patiently approached the veteran. The veteran was resistant to showering at first, but Ms. Reese used excellent communication skills and redirection to get her into the bathroom and into the shower. She was able to give the veteran a full body shower, only the second one in the three months the veteran has been on the unit. Ms. Reeseās calm demeanor gave the veteran the reassurance she needed to feel safe and comfortable in typically distressing situations.
