Going in to have a baby, I was full of emotions. Excited, scared, and everything in between. I had a few fantastic RNs that morning, but the care I received from Kate is something that I cannot describe. There are no words for how kind and compassionate she was. Things were going well with my labor when suddenly the baby’s heart rate dropped. A few RNs including Kate came in and started moving me around to try and get the heart rate up. Unfortunately, numerous minutes of fluctuating heart rate concluded with me needing an emergency c-section. The words came as a shock to me and I went from scared to terrified. Kate was there the entire time. She was calm, efficient, and comforting. Hers was the face I needed to get me through the scariest 8 minutes of my life- yet she was a stranger to me just hours prior. She held my hand while my husband was gowning. She did her job but took the time to make sure I was OK. She stayed with me and checked on me afterward. She hugged me when she left me in my room for the night- which meant more to me than I can say. I’m a proud employee of ProMedica Toledo Hospital, but that day I was the most grateful patient. I owe everything to the nurses and medical team that cared for my baby and me that day. Kate is the epitome of what RNs should be, and I am so fortunate she was there that day.
