Then Orrin began to sing the ABCs to my son. That was so comforting.
We brought my 13-year old autistic son into the ER. He was vomiting and had abdominal pain and was not walking well. His verbal communication is very low. Orrin was my son's awesome nurse. Orrin patiently let my son guide the wheelchair with his feet (he can't stand his feet up off the ground) to get his CT scan. The scan showed my son needed his appendix out. Orrin told us he would stay past his shift to get my son ready to put the IV in and do the blood draw. That way he could be the bad nurse and the nurse coming on could be the good nurse to my son as she wouldn't be the nurse sticking him. My son can't tolerate band-aids or needles or anything on him. Orrin was so good and caring with my son. When Orrin started to put the IV in my son, my son started to cry. Then Orrin began to sing the ABCs to my son. That was so comforting. He sang a little with Orrin and stopped crying. To us, Orrin is not "the bad" nurse, he helped my son tolerate things that are extremely intolerable to him. The calming effect Orrin brought to my son was wonderful. Orrin and my son are both "special" people. Thanks to Orrin's compassion this experience wasn't devastating to my son.
