Victoria’s attentiveness to and compassionate care given to our dying mother/my wife will never be forgotten.
We would like to nominate Victoria Citta for the DAISY Award to acknowledge her exemplary actions in caring for our mother/my wife . She was transferred to Capital Health Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2021. She was admitted to Steen 2, Room 202. It wasn’t until our mom’s/my wife’s final evening in the hospital on Aug. 6 that we met Victoria C., she would be our night nurse. Our mother/my wife rapidly declined after she made the decision that she no longer wanted treatment and wished for hospice. It was right before visiting hours were to end that Victoria was called to the room. Victoria was attentive to the call within a very short time. Because our mother/my wife was becoming restless and confused, her daughter requested to stay the night at the bedside. Within minutes, Victoria C. returned with confirmation that this request was approved. While it is reasonably assumed that she was not Victoria’s only patient, it felt like we were her top priority. Victoria checked on her and her daughter often, more than what was reasonably expected. With Victoria’s keen assessment, the orders that she had & acted on, her nursing judgement and her kind, gentle reassuring care to mom/my wife, we were comforted in knowing that she was not suffering was as important to Victoria as it was for us. Around midnight, it was clear that she was not going to make it to transfer to hospice. Victoria was perceptive to her decline and called Dr. Hanna, the attending. Dr. Hanna visited, assessed mom/my wife, and asked what the daughter wanted for her mother. Interventions were initiated by Victoria within minutes, and she made sure that her other daughter and husband were as comfortable as they could be during such a difficult time. To ensure she was comfortable, Victoria checked on mom/my wife and us every hour on the hour until her peaceful passing in the morning of Aug. 7, 2021. Victoria’s attentiveness to and compassionate care given to our dying mother/my wife will never be forgotten. She stayed with us yet gave us the time we needed to say our goodbyes. The care Victoria provided was special, a gift. She was our angel. Victoria, in your nursing career, you will touch many lives ~ patients, families, and colleagues. You won’t remember them all, but with the incredible care you provided to our mother/my wife, we will never forget you.
