My wife gave birth to my beautiful daughter on April 7th, 2021. We checked into registration that morning at 6:15 am, and when we got to the third floor, we were instantly greeted by a smile hidden behind a mask, but the warm welcome and bubbly personality made us feel like we were in the right place. We later found out that our nurse’s name was Diane and that she had been helping deliver babies longer than we were alive. Diane helped us from the first moment we found our room to a back massage for my wife just moments before the true birth. After getting to know Diane and the things she likes and loves about her job, she said the advancement in technology has revolutionized everything and made her job much easier; however, the use of modern technology has changed “bedside manner” for the worse. When she started, she said she would spend hours talking and finding out exactly what she did to make the patient more comfortable no matter the position; now she spends much time typing away or looking at the screen. In our time at the hospital, my wife would not have known the change in bedside manner because Diane was catering to her every need. Diane also mentioned starting a program to help new nurses manage the challenge of doing their official nursing jobs with all the charts and measurements as well as catering to the needs and wants of the patients/mothers. I nominate Diane for the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses!
