Aside from her exceptional care, she has also shown gentleness, kindness, compassion, and grace – not only to her patients but to her colleagues alike. One evening Allison overheard a conversation from a coworker speaking to the charge nurse about a patient who could not get home from the Emergency Room. This elderly woman was in the ER for nearly 7 hours and by the time she was discharged, it was too late to ride a bus. She was unable to secure a ride via taxi. She had no friends or family that were willing or able to come and help her. Because the patient’s condition was now stable and the census was full, admission to the hospital was not an option. Allison could see that the patient was in an isolation room stuck without a plan to return home. Without hesitation, she offered to give this patient a ride as her long shift was just about to end. Despite the patient living in the opposite direction of where Allison was headed, she still agreed to assist her with transportation.

In a world where strangers can be quite strange and no good deed goes unpunished, Allison trusted that everything would be fine. She delivered the patient safely back to her residence where she could finally get some much-needed rest. In doing so, she also freed up an emergency room bed so that others in the waiting room could now be seen. What might seem to be a simple act of kindness, Allison went extraordinarily above and beyond what most people would do. I am sure the patient will forever be grateful.
