Megan used her own money to get him a coffee and "coffee cake" to celebrate his birthday. She then sat with the patient while he enjoyed his birthday treat.
Megan is a very kind, compassionate, and caring nurse. She treats each patient as a person and not just a room number. Megan will get to know each of her patients by asking about their home life or hobbies. I will walk by and see her sitting with the patient really giving her full attention to what they are saying without being distracted or multitasking with the computer.
Yesterday was no exception. Megan had this patient for the past two days. She got to know him and his story. You could sense the patient was a bit lonely as it is COVID time and the hospital is not allowing any visitors to come. Megan learned that the patient was concerned because it was a Sunday and he always attended church/mass on Sunday. Megan told him the hospital has a chapel and the patient became happy. Religion was important to this patient. On top of it being Sunday, it was also the patient's birthday!! Spending a birthday in the hospital, let alone without visitors, is unfortunate. The kind and thoughtful nurse that Megan is, took this patient to the hospital chapel so he could say his prayers. On the way back from the chapel, she stopped in the coffee shop. Megan used her own money to get him a coffee and "coffee cake" to celebrate his birthday. She then sat with the patient while he enjoyed his birthday treat. The patient was so happy that he took a picture of his birthday celebration to send to his family to show them he was doing ok even without them being able to be with him.
