Daima intended to be there to hold his hand, sit with him, and be present with him when the end came.
In the previous year, the ICU has experienced an unprecedented number of patient deaths due to COVID and other diseases. Death has become a daily occurrence. Compassion in these times can wain because death is so prevalent. It takes a special person, a nurse, not to lose their compassion for patients at this time. Daima is one of these Extraordinary Nurses. Her compassion for patients is noticeable every day. I would like to recognize her for a particular instance of compassion.

This day started out like any other, caring for a patient whose vital signs were deteriorating and the decision was made by the family and medical team to withdraw life support measures. The family did not want to be present during his passing. Daima, being the compassionate nurse she is, did not want him to be alone when he passed. She vigilantly monitored his vital signs and said to me, "I don't want him to be alone." She intended to be there to hold his hand, sit with him, and be present with him when the end came. Her act of compassion would go unrecognized by the family and the patient, as he never regained consciousness. It is for this act of compassion, this extraordinary act of being present in the moment for a patient who would never know the name of the nurse caring for him, that makes Daima a true DAISY Nurse.
