Kylie spent hours with this young man in his room to help him feel safe and maintain his oxygen level.
Kylie showed an extraordinary amount of compassion to a special needs patient admitted to the ICU with Covid-19. I have worked with Kylie for over 5 years now and every shift she displays excellence and is a great team member. This patient was a young man with special needs who was admitted for respiratory distress. Overnight the patient would take off his oxygen which resulted in a drop in his O2 saturations (partly due to him being in a scary place and not fully comprehending what was going on). Kylie took extra consideration to call the patient's mother who was also sick with Covid to ask how best to communicate with him, what his favorite TV show was and his favorite food. Kylie spent hours with this young man in his room to help him feel safe and maintain his oxygen level. She went the extra mile to find his favorite show on TV (Friends) and order pizza (his favorite food). Next Kylie arranged for him and his mom to be double-bunked in the med/surg unit. When he saw a familiar face (his mom) I will never forget the excitement and pure joy on his face! This young man could have had a longer hospital course but because of Kylie's compassion and excellent care she found a way to communicate, build trust and care for a patient when he needed it most. I am so proud to be Kylie's coworker!
