Kaelyn set up the room with a recliner, soothing music, Kleenex, and a drink for the patient's spouse.
Kaelyn was caring for a very ill patient that was requiring maximum ventilator and vasopressor support. After having a conversation with the patient's spouse, the spouse made the patient a DNR. During the early hours of the morning, the patient, unfortunately, passed away. The night shift nurse, charge nurse, and AOD were unable to reach the patient's spouse. When the day shift arrived in the morning, Kaelyn took it upon herself to keep trying to contact the patient’s spouse, and almost went as far as having the police do a welfare check. Finally, she was able to get into contact with the patient’s spouse, to share that the patient had passed away peacefully in the early morning hours. The patient's spouse asked about seeing the patient one last time to say final good-byes. Kaelyn set up the room with a recliner, soothing music, Kleenex, and a drink for the patient's spouse. The patient's spouse was so extremely appreciative of her efforts to make the request a reality and could not stop thanking Kaelyn for everything. While this was a small simple task, this was a huge moment for the patient's spouse. I believe going above and beyond the expected norms is what differentiates a DAISY Nurse from a Nurse.
