A stat call was paged on the overhead to a clinic nearby Kim’s desk. As always, when there is an emergency called near Kim, she will be there in an instant offering assistance. In this particular instance, the patient had just finished testing, and more often than not, the patient can feel dizzy, nauseous, and at times feel faint. In this particular situation, the patient was uncontrollably convulsing. The patient stated she had never had this happen and she was very nervous as to what could be causing the extreme tremors.

When a stat call is paged, many clinicians come to the area to assist and assess. In this case, the patient was not feeling relieved and needed reassurance. Kim stayed by the patient’s side during the entirety. At one point, I saw Kim kneel in front of the patient for her to be at eye level and stated, “ I personally have had some experience with a family member in how to relieve and remedy these tremors and maybe we can work through them. Take some deep, slow breaths.” Kim was holding the patient’s hands and taking deep slow breaths alongside the patient. Of course, we know that nurses bring their clinical expertise to all situations, but Kim brought personal experience, which soothed and helped a patient during an unknown time. Kim is an outstanding compassionate nurse.
