Mariamma offered to keep her in her prayers because she was afraid of not knowing what was wrong with her and took her concerns seriously.
While completing nurse leader rounding, a patient wanted to share feedback on her interaction with the nursing team on 3 West. Her story left my heart full and proud, to say the least! The patient stated she has been a patient at other local facilities and has had some not-so-great experiences. Then she had a huge smile appear and placed her hand over her heart and began to tell me the story of her experience on 3 West

She stated during her ER stay, she was actually listened to. Then she was greeted by the most pleasant, polite, and humble nurse on the 3 West night shift who was very detailed in obtaining her medical history, allergies, and current complaints past events, etc. She stated that Mariamma Ignatius made eye contact with her to let her know she heard and took to account her fears, concerns, and issues. She also stated Mariamma gave her verbal “yes, ma’am” responses and asked her to pause so she could take notes to pass off in report to her oncoming shift in the morning so all of the details would be correct which made her feel safe in our care here at PMC.

She stated Mariamma checked on her frequently and asked her to make sure to call her for the first time she needed to get out of bed for toileting so she could make sure she was safe to be out of bed for assistance which was impressive as she had never had that happen any other time (and there were many). She added she had been hospitalized everywhere. The patient also stated that she was checked on frequently, temperature satisfaction and any other needs were checked before leaving the room after admission questioning was completed.

Mariamma offered to keep her in her prayers because she was afraid of not knowing what was wrong with her and took her concerns seriously. She stated any other staff, including the nurse aide was just as pleasant, polite, and helpful. She stated Mariamma asked her permission to do anything to her rather than to state she was going to do x-y-z which she thought was highly respectful to her as a patient. After having a peaceful first night at shift change, Mariamma brought in the other nurse and asked if it was ok to introduce her and go over her shift experiences, history, and upcoming events. She was also extremely detailed in reciting all allergies and the reaction, previous surgeries, and events that led her to transfer to Parkridge Medical Center.

She stated Mariamma did all of this work during the night and morning with a smile, calm voice, and soothing spirit about her that made her feel very cared for as a person – not a room number, not a diagnosis, not Ms. So&So down the hall, but as an actual person and made a wonderful connection that brought her so much more than a medical experience but a personal and spiritual experience as well. The patient ended her story by telling me, “I don’t know exactly what it is about this facility and this team who works here but other people need to learn about it. I will never go anywhere else for my care and I am telling my friends and family. I have posted it on Facebook and have a family member in nursing school whom I am going to refer to this hospital. The care and concern is a trickle effect that starts at the top and works its way down and it can be good or bad. In this case, it is exceptional and I wanted to let someone know what a wonderful nurse Mariamma has been to me and I am sure she is the same to each and every one of her patients."
