There was an internal code paged out in the Emergency Room today, where Katie was there assisting the primary nurse and team. Her expertise and knowledge during the medical alert were noted with how she remained calm and clear with her communication during the event. Soon after ROSC was achieved, she clearly communicated with the physician and team regarding the plan of care and the family’s wishes. The patient’s wife and daughter proceeded to make the patient DNR and Katie quickly was concerned about how to make the patient and room presentable to the family.

We proceeded to pick up the equipment and mess used during the medical alert. She made it a point to wash the patient's face and provide new sheets and gowns so he could be presentable. She retrieved chairs, tissue, and water for the family. Given the prognosis, Katie knew this would be the last time the family would be with him; she then pulled out her cell phone to play Beethoven for the gentlemen and his family and sat there with them. To experience what she did for this family in their time of need was very heartwarming. She definitely demonstrated going above and beyond and is an exceptionally compassionate nurse.
