I'm writing this letter in regard to my son's recent hospitalization at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital that ultimately led to him having his appendix removed. C is 29 years old and has a diagnosis of severe autism, ADHD, and mental retardation. He functions at an 18-month-old level and is non-verbal. C lives at home with my wife and me; we have legal guardianship of our son. We're grateful also to everyone on the 7 F unit where my son transferred after having surgery. In particular, Nurse Andrea went above and beyond to assist in C's recovery. She noticed that he was sleeping during the day and up at night and cautioned that oftentimes they see this behavior in older patients, and it can lead to confusion and other issues. She secured a wheelchair and recommended that we start to get C out of bed and moving which I feel expedited his recovery. Andrea was absolutely fantastic and should be recognized for her outstanding work!
