Every time the patient had her moments of capacity, Holly would sit and talk with the patient to clearly understand the patient's wishes.
Holly has been with PMC ICU since January 2021. Since the beginning, she enculturated herself into the Novant Health, PMC, and ICU culture. She quickly became a treasured team member. Holly is quick to adjust her schedule to meet the needs of the unit as a whole and individual nurses. She collaborates with all departments to provide excellent care and routinely goes above and beyond to give of herself in that care.

Holly recently had a patient who has a terminal illness complicated by the patient having a disconnect between her HCPOA and family, allegations of abuse, questionable decision-making capability, and people around the patient not acting in the patient's best interest. Holly worked tirelessly with our legal, risk management, and ethics team and integrated them with the family and acquaintances of the patient. All the while, every time the patient had her moments of capacity, Holly would sit and talk with the patient to clearly understand the patient's wishes. Holly then had multiple difficult conversations day in and day out with the NHPMC teams and the patient's representatives fiercely advocating for the patient. Holly took the brunt of verbal attacks from angry acquaintances and the utter grief of the family for many days.

On the last day of the patient's life, Holly arranged for the patient to be taken to a large window to see the sunshine one more time. Just arranging all the equipment and people was a major task and took a great deal of coordination by Holly. As comfort extubation occurred over the next 30 minutes, Holly held the patient's hand and comforted the family. As Holly said, "I see a smile on her face now". That smile was due largely in part to the expert and compassionate care delivered by Holly Wood.
