Emma was absolutely incredible, supportive, keeping our spirits up in a truly awful situation.
I am a Macmillan CNS but recently I was simply the relative of a patient who was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia the week before Christmas. He was admitted to NGH on Christmas Eve but continued to deteriorate. The whole team on HDU was unbelievably supportive and caring. They arranged the wedding for my brother and sister-in-law and it was a beautifully moving service in gorgeous but tragic surroundings as the team had made a huge effort to turn the room into a lovely wedding venue. Sadly, on New Year's Eve, his new wife and I were called in just before midnight as he was deteriorating. Emma was absolutely incredible, supportive, keeping our spirits up in a truly awful situation. At one point our relative was so exhausted that as his jaw relaxed he was blocking his airway. Emma, who is quite short in stature, spent what seemed like over an hour, stretched over the back of the bed, supporting his airway by holding his jaw, as the clinician could not attend immediately due to an issue on ITU. Emma must have been really uncomfortable but despite this, she remained cheerful and positive, with an air of calmness about her. It was really inspirational that there are such dedicated, special people in NGH. I was truly humbled. Sadly, he died on New Year's Day, but the kindness of the whole team, and Emma in particular, helped us cope.
