What started as a scheduled day surgery turned into a 3 day hospitalization. Last May, I fell and broke my right hip. During the surgery I had what was described as a mild stroke which affected my speech. I have lost most of my hearing in my left ear and am completely deaf in my right ear. It is usually difficult to communicate with my health care team. My nurse Katie took the extra time to listen to me express my needs. She showed sincere compassion in caring for me. Katie was constantly asking me if there was anything I needed. Katie made sure that my pain medication was given on time as I needed it and then assessed for its results. Katie explained everything she was doing for me and why she was doing it. She didn't mind talking to my wife about my care and what the changes were. Katie tried to make it so that my anxiety was low, even after finding out I had to stay another day. She didn't mind contacting the doctors about any questions or problems that arose. I can honestly say she went beyond the job requirements to make my stay as comfortable as possible. Katie is a genuine asset to the Veterans who come in contact with her and to the VA Hospital. One of the kindest and compassionate nurses I have ever had. She never failed to smile as she came in for anything.
